Five Hot Actresses Vie For Leads Opposite Tom Cruise in Horizons, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Also in this Friday edition of The Broadsheet: Olivia Wilde may find Better Living Through Chemistry… Natalie Portman and Katherine Heigl have something common… Paul Greengrass gets busy… and more ahead. · Time for another Tom Cruise-centric actress short list! Per Variety, Universal is testing five leading ladies to star opposite Cruise in Horizons (formerly Oblivion), the sci-fi blockbuster from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski that might remind you of WALL*E. The chosen five: Jessica Chastain, Olivia Wilde, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olga Kurylenko. Universal had no comment on the list (naturally), but the five will reportedly test with Kosinski over the weekend for the chance to star in one of two roles: the wife Cruise’s Jack had on Earth before aliens invaded and killed everyone, and the right-hand woman he teams with during missions back to Earth to repair safety drones that protect the planet from said aliens. [Variety] · Speaking of Olivia Wilde, the Cowboys & Aliens star will replace the pregnant Jennifer Garner in the indie comedy Better Living Through Chemistry. The film stars Sam Rockwell as a small-town pharmacist who has an affair with a trophy wife (Wilde) and winds up plotting to kill her husband. [Variety] · Holler at Paul Greengrass! The acclaimed director is attached to direct an adaptation of Robert Harris’s thriller Fear Index, “about a scientist who uses a revolutionary system of computer algorithms to trade on the volatility of the world’s financial markets. His hedge fund is wildly successful until he is targeted by an intruder who breaks into his home.” Tense! In other directorial news, Robert Zemeckis will officially handle Flight with Denzel Washington set to star. [Deadline] · EW reports that Natalie Portman has turned down an offer to star in Adaline, a film about a woman who stops aging after a mysterious accident. If that sounds familiar, it’s because you might remember when Katherine Heigl was attached to the lead role. [EW] · The headline from THR: “Blade Runner Actor Joins Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.” What it actually means: James Hong — the famed character actor who you know from Big Trouble in Little China, Seinfeld, Wayne’s World and, yes, also Blade Runner — will co-star in R.I.P.D. as “Grandpa Chen,” the human avatar that people see when Ryan Reynolds’s deceased cop goes out in the field. He joins Marisa Miller who was just set as Jeff Bridges’s human avatar. Sorry if you were hoping that Harrison Ford, Sean Young or Rutger Hauer were cast. Also: Schwentke! [THR/Heat Vision] · First, the years-delayed Margaret gets a release date, and now Fireflies in the Garden does too. The Julia Roberts-led drama was shot in 2007, and will finally hit theaters on Oct. 14 in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The filmmakers themselves are putting Garden one out, so don’t expect much pomp and circumstance. Ryan Reynolds, Emily Watson, Willem Dafoe and Carrie-Anne Moss co-star in this curio. [Deadline]

New 'Sherlock Holmes' Photos Tease The 'Game Of Shadows'

After the massive success of the first Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movie, Warner Bros. got right on setting up a sequel, which eventually became this Decembers Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The most recent issue of Empire magazine features the films star Robert Downey, Jr. on the cover, but also boasts several photos of the shoot, including a behind-the-scenes look at the cast with Ritchie himself. Returning from the first film are Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, who plays able sidekick Dr. John Watson. The movie is also bringing out characters from the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, including Sherlocks brother Mycroft (played by Stephen Fry) and legendary villain Professor Moriarty, who is being portrayed by Mad Men actor Jared Harris. The production also features new characters, like Noomi Rapaces mysterious gypsy Sim. As seen at Empire Online, the first photo shows three of the principal castmembers, Downey, Jr, Law and Rapace, seated around a table together. While the image itself is somewhat mundane, it likely points toward the way in which new character Sim will freshen up the already compelling dynamic between Holmes and Watson. The second photo is probably our favorite, as its a true behind-the-scenes look at the production. Downey, Jr. and Law crowd around what we assume to be a monitor to observe footage with director Guy Ritchie. Finally, and most importantly, the last image gives us a peek at Jared Harris as Holmes arch nemesis Professor Moriarty. Judging from the scripts and pencils in peoples hands, this isnt a still from the movie, but our nerd-senses are already tingling at the idea of a chess game between Moriarty and Holmes. If were lucky, maybe this scene is even set in the Diogenes Club What do you think about the new images from Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows? Can you spot anything that we might have missed? Also in this Wednesday edition of The Broadsheet: Adam Scott is an A.C.O.D.… Viola Davis heads to HBO… Elizabeth Olsen has some thoughts about female roles in Hollywood… and more ahead. · Not that you needed any more proof that little Dakota Fanning isn’t so little anymore, but the actress has signed on to play the titular role of a sexless wife in Effie. Written by Emma Thompson, Effie tells the true story of teen bride Euphemia Gray (Fanning) and her marriage to famed critic John Ruskin in 1850s London. Per Deadline, “Effie’s husband never consummated the marriage over five years because Ruskin was for some reason disgusted by her body.” Richard Laxton (An Englishman in New York) will direct, with Thompson, Tom Sturridge and Greg Wise co-starring. Before Fanning signed on, both Saoirse Ronan and Carey Mulligan were circling the project. [Deadline] · Adam Scott will lead the indie comedy A.C.O.D. The show — which surprisingly is listed as a half-hour vehicle, despite seeming like a drama — would follow a prep school headmaster (the role Davis could play) as she handles city corruption and her own hopes and dreams. Sounds like The Wire by way of Gossip Girl. [Variety] · Remember reading about how the Sex and the City prequel was probably going to be a television show? Well, it’s probably going to be a television show. HBO is shopping The Carrie Diaries to The CW, and the teen-centric network is interested in putting Gossip Girl executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage in charge of production. Neither Sarah Jessica Parker or Michael Patrick King are attached. XOXO. [Deadline] · “A lot of times with female relationships and young women [in the movies], it’s either Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants or catty bitch. I just have a problem with that. They’re supposed to be either as perfect as how they’re portrayed on Disney or as mean as they’re portrayed in high school movies. And in real life it’s neither of those.” Future It-Girl Elizabeth Olsen sums up a major problem in Hollywood. [LAT/24 Frames]
